Bianca Hernandez enjoyed a good freshman season at Cypress Creek last year, shooting an 80 in the Class 2A, District 8 tournament and becoming the top freshman finisher in the region tournament with an 83.

Then she moved to the new school at Lake Nona this year.

Varsity the Weekly sat down with Hernandez and got her thoughts on the PGA Tour, superstitions, karate and more.

Varsity the Weekly: How did you get into golf?

Bianca Hernandez: “My dad was a baseball player, and he started me off with baseball when I was younger. I really didn’t like it all that much, so one day he got me a golf club. He took me out to the range, and I liked it so we stuck with it.”

VTW: What is the best round you’ve ever shot?

BH: “My best score for nine holes was a 33, and for 18 holes, it’s a 75. They were both at Eagle Creek.”

VTW: How did you feel when you shot 33?

BH: “It felt amazing. I was just so happy. I didn’t think I could shoot a 33, but I went out and I showed that I could. My goal is to average even par for the year.”

VTW: Do you watch golf on TV?

BH: “I do, but I don’t have a favorite golfer. I just like watching the tournaments. I like seeing how every player is different. Everyone has a different swing, and they all have different strategies.”

VTW: Golf can be a pretty superstitious sport. Do you have any superstitions?

BH: “Usually every time I play, I have to throw a ball in the water at least once. It’s usually on the first water hole. I’ve been doing it for about three years. I’ve been playing pretty good for the last three years, so I guess it’s working. One day I had a bad hole before and I decided to throw my ball in the water, and on the next hole, I got a birdie, so I kept doing it.”

VTW: What do you do in your free time?

BH: “I love sports, and I’m open to trying them all. I love going out and playing sports, and I love learning new sports. I’m a sports fanatic.”

VTW: Do you have a favorite team?

BH: “I actually really like UCF. It’s a school I’d like to go to. I want to stay in Florida when I go to college, and I really like UCF. I was born in Orlando, and I’ve just always been a fan.”

VTW: What is your favorite sport besides golf?

BH: “I really like volleyball, and I guess you could consider karate a sport. I take karate lessons. During the season I stop, but after golf season, I go back to karate. Right now, I’m a green belt.”

When did Lake Nona become part of Narcoossee? You know, Narcoossee, Osceola County, north of Runnymede and Ashton.

Willis, though it’s not exactly marketed this way, this site is meant to cover what we call the Narcoossee Rd corridor – from 192 to approx Lee Vista. When I bought the site many years ago, there wasn’t much going on anywhere around town, but now with the Medical Center going in, it’s hard not to cover it. I appreciate you taking the time to check out the site and to leave a comment. We’re open to feedback, so if you have any suggestions, let me know.
