Construction is scheduled to begin in July for a University of Florida research and academic center in the developing “medical city” in Lake Nona.

The UF College of Pharmacy’s academic program will be a principal occupant of the planned four-story, 115,000-square foot building.

The state Board of Governors on Wednesday designated the planned building a center, which means the facility will offer a limited range of courses.

The UF center will be located next to the Sanford-Burnham Institute for Medical Research and near the University of Central Florida’s permanent medical school.

The center will support research in health fields such as pharmacy, dentistry, medicine, nursing and public health. It will include classrooms, administrative and faculty offices and a drug development center.

The state allocated $6 million for design and site preparation in 2008. Lake Nona Research I, LLC donated the more than 5-acre location in October.

The Lake Nona Lacrosse team defeated the Freedom Patriots last night, 13 to 2, guaranteeing them their first winning season. Cody Langston and Austin Howard each had 5 goals, and Nick Soracco added 3 goals. Goalie Matt Herrera also had an assisted goal. Tonight is the Lacrosse team’s last game, so come out and support them as we host Wekiva at home, game time 6:00 pm.

Last night the girls flag football J.V. team won its first game against Winter Park by a score of 6-2. Nadie Jimenez scored the only touchdown of the night.

The Varsity also won its first game last night beating Winter Park 20-0. A great effort by Nicole Fisher, who threw for 3 touchdowns, led the way. Brianna Wright had another good game on offense and defense. Cole Trimble had a great touchdown catch and Sarah Centeno also helped out a lot on offense. Congrats to all the girls earning their first ever victory in school history.

When it comes to unemployment, Central Florida is setting records.

In the metro Orlando area, unemployment reached 12.4 percent in February, which is the highest rate since 1975.

Experts said they believe there are jobs available, and those who are unemployed should keep looking.

“There are construction projects going on, big ones,” Workforce Central Florida representative Gary Earl said.
Earl readily admitted construction took the biggest hit when the economy tanked, but he also said the new Amway Center and medical development at Lake Nona have all created opportunity.

“Hopefully, in the next three to six months, we’ll see (unemployment) peak and start to crawl back down a little bit, but in saying that, I would emphasize crawl. I think it’s going to be a very slow process,” Earl said. “Even if we had money to invest, I would probably wait to see what the economy will do before you stick your neck out.”
