UCF Med school seeks silver nod for green building

The University of Central Florida’s $69.5 million College of Medicine at Lake Nona in southeast Orlando is seeking silver certification from the United States Green Building Council.

The four-story, 175,000-square-foot facility reduced its potential environmental impacts in several categories: a 64 percent reduction in water use for irrigation, a 48 percent reduction in indoor-water use, a 21 percent reduction in energy use, non-ozone-depleting refrigerants, reflective roofing to reduce cooling costs, and the lowest power-using flat-screen monitors currently available in North America

Orlando already has 13 gold-level buildings and one silver.

Altamonte Springs-based specialty contractor Randall Mechanical Inc. completed $8 million of specialty heating, ventilation, air conditioning and plumbing work at the project.

UCF College of Medicine – The Impact

The Spring 2009 edition of UCF Today headlined the economic impact of the new UCF College of Medicine. They requested more information to let our community know some specifics about the new College and its impact.

The new College of Medicine will locate near Lake Nona. If you travel SR 417, you will notice the new interchange construction near Narcoossee Road. The large construction area to the South of this area is the new College of Medicine along with other health care facilities – California-based Burnham Institute for Medical Research, a Veteran’s Administration hospital, Nemours Children’s Hospital and M.D. Anderson Cancer Research Institute.

Upon completion, this area will likely be known as the Lake Nona Medical City.

UCF College of Medicine – Classes Start Soon

If you head over to the UCF Medical School website, you’ll see they’ve added a countdown clock to let you know when classes will start. As of writing this, there are 28 days left. This is a new era for Lake Nona, and the surrounding areas. The UCF Medical School will usher in a strong local economy, and make Lake Nona and Narcoossee a household name, instead of, “That place by the airport.”

You can see the days, hours, minutes and seconds ticking down on a countdown clock posted prominently on the school’s Web site, which is stuffed with reminders of major events to date. Among them are the school’s creation by the Legislature in spring 2006, the hiring of founding Dean Deborah German late the same year and groundbreaking in October 2007 for the $68million permanent classroom building and library in Orlando’s Lake Nona area.

The first day of class will see 40 students. We’ll keep you updated with more info on the UCF College of Medicine.
