This list was created by a panel of 14 plugged-in observers — leaders from the business, nonprofit, political, education, government and grass-roots sectors of our community.

Rasesh Thakkar, from Tavistock Group, took the 21st spot. Thakkar’s name probably isn’t as widely recognized as most on this list. But insiders know the 48-year-old as the point man for the influential Tavistock Group, which owns Isleworth and Lake Nona and has been intimately involved in east Orlando’s burgeoning medical city. One panelist described Thakkar as “the eyes and ears” of Tavistock’s super-wealthy founder, the reclusive Joe Lewis.

Hundreds of people packed Church Street Station near the tracks to hear the Governor talk about the bill:

“This is a Florida day. A great day for the Sunshine State. This is about jobs, jobs, jobs.”

After the ceremony, Crist was asked by reporters about “Waffle-gate.”

“I’ve asked our inspector general to look into it. I think that’s appropriate. I hope we get a good resolution soon.”

There were protesters in the crowd, some carrying waffles. Orange County Mayor Candidate Matthew Falconer was there to voice his objections. He says commuter rail is nothing but a $10 billion tax burden.

“I just think it’s the most expensive way to move people.”

Orlando’s apartment market is expected to further erode for the remainder of the year as “a weak economy stifles household formation and rental housing demand,” according to a quarterly report released recently by Marcus and Millichap.

The firm’s Apartment Research Market Update noted the opening of University of Central Florida’s medical school during the third quarter, stating that it has not averted a rise in vacancies but is expected to help diversify the economy and fuel growth.

Construction and permits continued to ease during the quarter, likely increasing demand with fewer new projects coming on line.

Rents have dropped, the report stated, although rental decreases may lessen with a stabilization of the economy in coming months.

Multifamily housing in Orlando’s northwest sector appears to be struggling with rents dropping more than 5 percent in the last year to an effective monthly rated of $616. Meanwhile the area’s vacancy rate was about 15 percent — the highest overall for Central Florida.

Florida officials like their chances of winning billions of federal dollars for a high-speed train, but almost every contender from California to Georgia insists its rail pitch is the best.

Actually, the proposals are far from equal. Some applicants bring money, land or potential passengers. Others offer little more than what they think to be a great idea.

The Federal Railroad Administration is checking out the plans right now, sifting through 45 requests from 24 states seeking a total of $50 billion. An additional 214 applications from 34 states are asking for $7billion for planning and smaller projects.

The official word out of FRA offers little insight into what the agency really wants.
